    Objectives and targets
    Train 700 teachers in the municipalities of Aracruz, Colatina, Conceição da Barra, Fundão, Jaguaré, Ibiraçu, João Neiva, Linhares, Pedro Canário, São Mateus and Sooretama through the Formar Project, in partnership with the Interdisciplinary Education Network (RIED) and the local city governments.
    Results in 2004
    671 of the 814 teachers taking part in the project performed well and were certified. The Formar project met its goal of providing training to 100% of the primary school teachers from the 10 municipalities where it was developed in the past two years.
    Evaluation
    Target only partially achieved due to the failure of the municipality of Aracruz to participate in the project.

    Raise the schooling level of company employees, offering Primary and Secondary Education to 200 employees in Aracruz, São Mateus and Posto da Mata through the Arcel Educar Project, in partnership with the Brazilian Education Foundation.

    Objectives and targets
    Ensure quality Primary and Secondary Education to children of employees, contractors and the community in general in partnership with the Pitágoras High School, and provide support for 1,200 Primary and Secondary School students through the Coqueiral Parents and Teachers Association, in partnership with the Coqueiral Primo Bitti Public School (Aracruz, ES).

    Objectives and targets
    Help 647 socially vulnerable youngsters through the following projects:
    • Forming Citizens, in partnership with the Christian Engagement Service (SECRI) via the Faith through Action Program, in Vitória (ES);
    • Araçá Project, in São Mateus (ES) in partnership with the São Mateus city government (ES) and the federal government via the Child Labor Eradication Program (PETI);
    • Children of the Earth Project, in Linhares (ES) in partnership with the University of Linhares and the city government; and
    • Berimbau, em parceria com a Prefeitura Municipal de Nova Viçosa (BA).

    A total of 716 children and teenagers took part in the socio-educational programs supported by the Company, which sought to help transform the potential of youngsters in personal, relational, productive and cognitive skills.

    Objectives and targets
    Provide a college entrance preparation course for 1,115 public school students through the University for All Project, preparing them to compete for access to Higher Education in partnership with the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES), the Ceciliano Abel de Almeida Foundation, the Vitória city government, the Companhia Siderúrgica de Tubarão and the city governments of Serra and Linhares.

    The project began its 2004 activities with more than 1,000 students and completed the year with 850 students, 680 of whom passed the 1st stage of the 2005 UFES entrance examan 80% acceptance rate, the highest in the state.

    Objectives and targets
    Provide assistance to 171 physically and/or mentally handicapped children, teenagers and adults through the Rehabilitate Project, in partnership with the Pestalozzi Society of Teixeira de Freitas (BA).

    Assistance to 171 persons, including children, adolescents and adults, with special needs.
    Construction of two new classrooms and expansion of the lunchroom at the institution’s head office, enabling a further 48 people to be assisted.

    Sixty students from the 2nd year of middle school education at the Eraldo Tinoco State School took part in the project, 49 of which completed the 12 training modules. Nine students received special certificates referring only to the courses taken.
    A new module introduced in 2004 taught basic Internet skills, accessed via radio connection. Aracruz sponsored the infrastructure, benefiting the school’s 1,200 students.

    Objectives and targets
    Assist around 1,500 students through support for establishment of computer classrooms, fostering the training of professionals and the elimination of digital exclusion through the Digit@l Space Project, in partnership with the Timber Industry Workers Unions of the municipalities of Aracruz, Ibiraçu, Fundão, João Neiva and Serra (ES), the Forest Agriculture and Wood Planting, Treatment, Extraction and Processing Workers Union of the Extreme South of Bahia, the Workers Union for employees involved with firewood extraction in the municipalities of São Mateus, Pedro Canário, Montanha, Pinheiro, Conceição da Barra, Jaguaré, Rio Bananal and Linhares (ES) and the Highway Workers Union.

    Objectives and targets
    Increase the number of students receiving school notebooks through the Education Project, including the state public schools in municipalities in southern Brazil where the Company is active. To achieve this end, the production of school notebooks needs to rise to 360,000.

    360,000 school notebooks were distributed to 120,000 public school students in the city of Guaíba and another 23 municipalities where Aracruz is active.

    Set up a class of 10 students from the NGO Projeto Pescar Foundation within the Company’s facilities, designed to train youngsters from the region for the job market.

  • Social and economic development

    Objectives and targets
    Donate the following to local farmers and communities: 1,000 t of lime/year to farmers, in partnership with the Espírito Santo State Farming Federation (FAES); 200,000 hatchery fish of carpa-capim, pacu, tambaqui and piauçu species, in partnership with Arapeixe in Aracruz (ES).

    455 tons of lime donated.
    150,000 hatchery fish donated to the ES Agricultural Secretary.
    Another 350,000 hatchery fish in production phase will be donated in January and February /2005.

    Objectives and targets
    Develop in conjunction with community leaders projects defined by the community that aim to improve general social well-being, in partnership with community associations from Barra do Riacho and regional fishing organizations (ES).

    The Company’s social investments were split into separate actions in response to the demand of various sectors of organized civil society in Barra do Riacho. The most significant investment made was to reform the head office of the Barra do Riacho Community Association.

    Objectives and targets
    Support the implementation of agricultural projects defined by indigenous communities and support the preservation of Guarani culture, in partnership with the Brazilian Bureau of Indian Affairs (FUNAI), the Association of Alternative Technology Programs (APTA) and the Aracruz city government (ES).
    Results in 2004
    A significant improvement was seen in the results achieved by the projects, especially in productive terms, following the contracting of a new consultancy firm. The cultural support project was widened to the Tupinikim community, including both adults and children. An Arts Workshop is in construction phase in Caieiras Velhas village, which will act as a focus for all the artistic activities of the two communities.

    Objectives and targets
    Involve primarily the Company’s own employees through awareness and motivation building actions, through the Aracruz Volunteer Program, in partnership with Espírito Santo Community Action (ACES) and the Minas Gerais Federation of Industries.

    74 actions were carried out, involving 411 volunteers and benefiting around 11,800 people.

    Objectives and targets
    Produce 260,000 seedlings of native species, as well as other commercial species, in the Aparaju (Alcobaça, BA) and Ibirapuã (BA) community plant nurseries, through the Community Seedling Nurseries Project, in partnership with local city governments and community associations.

    Combined, the Ibirapuã and Aparajú nurseries produced 260,000 seedlings of native species sold to Aracruz, generating US$36,000 in income for the Associations.

    Objectives and targets
    Promote short-cycle crops in the communities of Novo Destino, Pouso Alegre and Taquari (Alcobaça BA), Vila Portela and Juazeiro (Ibirapuã, BA) and Espora Gato (Caravelas BA), through the Family Agriculture Project, in partnership with local government and community associations.

    The projects were in full productive activity. The Company ran specific courses in some communities.
    Two new projects were launched for harvesting and selling limes and tangerines in Constelação and Itaitinga, in Alcobaça.

    Objectives and targets
    Foster honey production in the Company’s eucalyptus plantations in areas where it operates in Bahia and Espírito Santo through the Solidarity Beekeeping Program, in partnership with associations of small farmers.

    A pilot project was launched in Aracruz with the involvement of the local Beekeepers Association, initially benefiting four beekeepers producing 250 kg of honey.
    The project is in the process of being introduced in Bahia, with the cooperation and partnership of the state government.
