Cereias
The Cereias Wild Animal Rehabilitation Center was set up in 1993 to return animals captured by IBAMA and the Environmental Police to their natural habitat. It occupies an area of 11.5 hectares donated by Aracruz in the municipality of Barra do Riacho (ES). In addition to Aracruz and IBAMA, Cereias is maintained annually by contributions from 22 companies.
In 2004, an auditorium was inaugurated for lectures and thematic classes along with a museum. Since its outset, Cereias has already received 57,000 animals, comprising 91.1% birds, 4.6% mammals and 4.3% reptiles.
Approximately 79.1% of the animals passing through the center are returned to their habitat, 2.1% are transferred to other institutions and approximately 16.7% die as a result of their poor condition when they arrive at Cereias. At the end of 2004, 1,146 animals were receiving treatment at the center.
