Environmental education program

Barra do Riacho Unit

An Environmental Education Program Management Committee was created in 2004 to improve the environmental training and awareness of employees. The program aims to evaluate current actions and extend their reach throughout the Company and permanent outsourced supplier employees, totaling approximately 7,000 people.

For the forestry area, a model of short, regular dialogues involving representatives selected from each department and each outsourced supplier was chosen. Six training courses were taught in 2004 in which 121 representatives received the materials and guidelines needed to educate approximately 6,000 employees.

Thirteen environmental education events were put on for 442 farmers enrolled in the Forestry Partners Program in Espírito Santo.

A model was established for the industrial and administrative area in which all the employees are trained simultaneously in a single location during four annual meetings.

Guaíba Unit

In the industrial area, the selective waste collection system was revised to include other classes of collection, with training for all unit workers (employees and outsourced staff). The environmental education team continued its evaluation of the selective collection points, identifying non-compliances and establishing remedial actions.

In the forestry area, a booklet was produced which provides workers with general ideas on soil conservation, water resources and biodiversity in relation to forest activities, along with Aracruz’s management policy. The environmental education team scheduled meetings with the workforce for the period running from October 2004 to March 2005 to improve knowledge of ecological concepts, forest certification and disposal of waste from each activity.
