Presence in forums
Aracruz participates in the creation of programs, policies and regulations that foster sustainable development.
Aracruz is actively involved in the creation of programs, policies and regulations that seek to foster sustainable development. The Company participated in the Global Compact conference held in June at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
The Company participated in the Global Compact conference held in June at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The Global Compact is an initiative of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan that involves 1,400 companies from around the world, including Aracruz,to encourage the achievement of the UN ’s goals in the fields of human rights,labor,the environment and the battle against corruption.
We also participated in dialogues run by The Forest Dialogue (TFD), an international multi-sector forum designed to discuss social and environmental questions related to forests.
Furthermore, Aracruz participated in a number of state and municipal environmental commissions in Espírito Santo, Bahia and Rio Grande do Sul, as well as a number of different Brazilian bodies.
Participation in forums and organizations
In 2004, Aracruz participated in the following forums:
- World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) – Aracruz is a member of and sits on the Forestry Industry Work Group.
- Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS) – Aracruz is associated with, and the Chairman of the Board of Aracruz is a member of, the CEBDS Board of Directors.
- Brazilian Pulp and Paper Association (BRACELPA) – Aracruz holds the pulp vice presidency and also chairs the Certification Task Force.
- Brazilian Association of Forest Plantation Producers (ABRAF) – Aracruz participates in the association and occupies the presidency of the institution.
- Brazilian Pulp and Paper Technical Association (ABTCP) – Aracruz has a seat on the board and sits on the Environmental Committee and the Recuperation and Utilities Committee.
- Brazilian Association of Publicly Traded Companies (ABRASCA) – Aracruz has a seat on the Board of Directors.
- Federation of Industries of the State of Espírito Santo (FINDES) – Aracruz sits on the Board and the Environmental Council and chairs Sindipapel.
- Federation of Industries of the State of Bahia (FIEB) – Aracruz is on the board of the Center of Industry of the State of Bahia (CIEB) and is member of the organization’s Environmental Committee.
- International Forest Industry Roundtable (IFIR) – Aracruz represents BRACELPA at IFIR meetings and is co-chair of the Working Group on Mutual Recognition of Forest Certification Systems.
- Brazilian Forest Certification Program (CERFLOR) – Aracruz represents BRACELPA on the Forestry Technical Subcommittee of the Brazilian Certification Committee. It also participates in the ABNT’s Forest Plantation Temporary Special Studies Commission.
- The Brazilian Human Resources Association (ABRH-ES) – Aracruz is a member of the board of the organization.
- Center to Help Small Businessmen in Espírito Santo(CEAPES) – Aracruz is part of the Board of Directors and the management of this non-governmental organization, created by the Company itself together with 13 other local companies.
- Global Forest Industry CEO Forum– Aracruz’s CEO participates in this forum, which discusses environmental topics related to the industry.
- Global Compact Initiative of the United Nations – Aracruz has actively participated in the meetings put on by this entity.
- Bioatlântica Institute (IBIO) – Aracruz is one of the founding partners and actively participates in its activities.
- Entrepreneurial Excellence Center (CENEX) – Aracruz is a member and sits on the Board of Directors.
- Junior Achievement Association of the State of Espírito Santo – Aracruz is a member and sits on the Board of Directors.
- Espírito Santo Volunteers Movement – Aracruz is a member.
- American Chamber of Commerce (Amcham New York) – Aracruz’s Chairman represents the company in this organization.
- American Chamber of Commerce (Amcham Vitória) – Aracruz’s CEO is the president of this association.
- Society of Forestry Investigations (SIF/UFV) – Aracruz is a member and participates in a number of research projects coordinated by the organization.
- Forestry Research and Studies Institute (IPEF/ESALQ/USP) – Aracruz is a member and participates in a number of research projects coordinated by the organization.
- Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) – Aracruz has partnership agreements related to forestry technology development.
- Forestry Agriculture Research and Studies Institute (FEPAF) – Aracruz participates in environmental accords.
- Paraná Forestry Research Foundation – Aracruz is conducting studies in the field of forestry biometrics.
- Federal University of Lavras (UFLA) – Aracruz has an agreement in the fields of soil management and genetic enhancement.
- Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) – Aracruz participates in an agreement in the field of solid wood products.
- Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul Support Foundation (FAURGS) – Aracruz has an agreement in the fields of biotechnology and vegetative propagation.
- National Association for Manufacturing CompanyResearch and Development (ANPEI) – Aracruz is a member and participates in projects in the field of technological innovation.
- Technical Association for the Worldwide Pulp and Paper and Converting Industry (TAPPI) – Aracruz is a member and shares information in the field of pulp and paper.
- Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada (PAPTAC) – Aracruz is a member in order to share information in the field of pulp and paper.
- Empire State Paper Research Institute (ESPRI) – Aracruz is a member, participating in consortia in the field of pulp and paper.
