Arus – the Aracruz Social Security Foundation – ended the year with 3,837 participants, of which 2,126 are employees of Aracruz and Portocel. Arus is a closed Private Pension Plan entity and Aracruz is its principal sponsor. In 2004, Aracruz and Portocel earmarked US$1.6 million of Arus’ funds to reinforce the retirement funds of members and contribute to the costs of disability retirement and death benefits, offered free of charge. Considering just the Aracruz and Portocel benefits plans, the Foundation paid out US$4.3 million in benefits during the year and ended the fiscal year with a net worth of US$117.1 million.
