- ISO 9001
- Barra do Riacho Unit certified in January 1995 for all activities; the industrial area of the Guaíba Unit certified in July 2003; the forestry activities of the Guaíba Unit are under preparation for certification.
- ISO 14001
- Since October 1999 for the Barra do Riacho Unit and since November 1996 for the Guaíba Unit.
- Forestry certifications
- Brazilian Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
- The Rio Grande do Sul Forestry Management Unit (Guaíba Unit) has been certified by the FSC since December 2001, with the third annual monitoring process being conducted in December 2004. This audit pointed out corrective action to be taken and certification was maintained. The area under certification totals 58,818 ha.
- Brazilian Forestry Certification Program (CERFLOR)
- An annual maintenance audit was conducted in October 2004 of Company plantations located in Bahia that had been certified in 2003, with no non-conformities recorded.
In 2004, the process for certification of plantations in our own management areas in the state of Espírito Santo was initiated, whose first stage involved holding six public hearings. The second and last stage of the process will begin in January 2005, to be concluded in the first quarter of the year. Certification of our plantations in Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul are also expected in 2005. This indicates our intention for the plantations in Rio Grande do Sul to have double certification – FSC and CERFLOR – which will make it possible to examine better the differences between these two systems.
Our goal is to reach the end of 2005 with 385,411 ha certified under CERFLOR (plantation, preservation and other use areas), of which 166,088 ha will be in Bahia, 146,888 ha in Espírito Santo, 13,617 ha in Minas Gerais and 58,818 ha in Rio Grande do Sul, thus covering all the areas that are directly managed by Aracruz. In 2005, these areas will be responsible for 76% of the supply of wood to Barra do Riacho and 77% to Guaíba.
The following sources of wood supply will not be certified for the production of pulp: areas included in the Forestry Partners Program; the area that Aracruz owns together with Suzano Papel e Celulose in Espírito Santo and which was acquired from Cia. Vale do Rio Doce; and areas belonging to independent producers in Rio Grande do Sul.
