Barra do Riacho Unit
The company was served with an environmental notification of a US$188,000 fine by the Espírito Santo State Environmental and Water Resources Institute (IEMA). The notification alleged that Aracruz had dredged a river without the appropriate environmental permit. We presented an administrative defense, arguing that cleaning, not dredging, operations had been conducted and, thus, an environmental license was not necessary. We are awaiting a decision on our defense.
Guaíba Unit
The company was served with an environmental notification of a US$2,630.00 fine referring to the emission of particulate material into the atmosphere beyond the limits of company property. Improper operation by a supplier during the installation and adjustment of a new electrostatic precipitator in the power boiler was determined to have been the cause of the emission in question. The fine was paid and the process was concluded.
